ONLINE PRIVACY ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES ENFORCEMENT POLICY
TO ENSURE PRIVACY PROTECTIONS IN CYBERSPACE

WHAT:

A
telephone conference call to brief reporters on the enforcement
policy developed by the Online Privacy Alliance, a broad cross-industry
alliance of more than 50 global companies and associations committed
to promoting privacy online.
The call
will follow briefings with Administration officials and testimony
before the House Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Telecommunications,
Trade and Consumer Protection, which is holding a hearing
Tuesday on electronic commerce and Internet privacy.

WHY:

To introduce a framework for enforcing privacy policies that
adhere to guidelines set out by the Online Privacy Alliance
last month.
After
organizing as a group of companies and associations committed
to fostering an online environment that protects privacy,
the Online Privacy Alliance developed a statement of its mission,
a set of guidelines governing privacy practices and a special
policy to safeguard the privacy of children. The alliance
also committed to developing mechanisms by September for enforcing
privacy policies. This announcement fulfills the commitment
to develop the enforcement policy.
