PRIVACY ALLIANCE STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION'S
FINAL RULES ON THE CHILDREN'S ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT
WASHINGTON,
D.C. (Oct. 20, 1999) - The Online Privacy Alliance, a coalition
of global companies and associations working toward self-regulation
of privacy online, today issued the following statement in response
the FTC's Final Rules on children's privacy:
"The Online
Privacy Alliance commends the Federal Trade Commission on striking
a balance between the obvious need to protect children online and
the need to maintain the interactivity that kids enjoy so much.
Interactivity is the hallmark of the Net and the rules recognize
that," said Christine Varney, the advisor to the Online Privacy
Alliance. "The rules also recognize the speed at which Internet
technology changes and the decision to revisit the rules in two
years is sophisticated and sensible."
